EQUIPMENT PURCHASING GUIDE

Dumbbells and Weight Plates

Fixed or adjustable, hex or round, rubber or cast iron. The differences that matter are increments, storage and what arrives in the carton.

Fixed or adjustable

Fixed dumbbells are faster to use and harder to damage, but they need a rack and they cost more per kilogram. Adjustable dumbbells cover a wide range in one footprint, which suits home gyms and small studios. In a commercial floor, adjustable sets are usually reserved for a secondary area because changing load between sets slows a class down.

Hex, round and urethane

Hex heads do not roll, which protects floors and ankles. Round or cast-iron heads are cheaper but will mark a floor and are noisier when dropped. Rubber or urethane coating reduces noise and damage but adds cost. If the gym has a rubber floor and a drop zone, the coating matters; if the dumbbells live on a rack, it matters less.

Increments decide usefulness

A set that jumps from 20 kg to 40 kg is a home set. Commercial floors need small jumps at the light end and larger ones higher up. Agree the increment list per set before choosing quantities, and ask whether single pairs can be added later without buying a whole new set.

Plates, bars and bore size

Plates are only useful if they fit the bars you own. Confirm the bore diameter and whether collars are included. For export orders, check the packed weight: plates are cheap per unit and expensive per kilogram to ship, so freight often dominates the landed cost.
